Commissioned to work with CE on a large scale online educational survey re-design, the "Tripod project" was rolled out to hundreds of thousands of school children throughout the US to help assess how well teaching methods were working across states.

The first project I was commissioned to work with CE on was a large scale online educational survey re-design. The "Tripod project" was rolled out to hundreds of thousands of school children to help assess how well teaching methods were working across states.

The Tripod project was established in an effort to improve academic achievement amongst students across the United States (USA). Students were surveyed online using the Qualtrics research platform. The project was also part of the "Measures of Effective Teaching Project", which is sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The survey itself is tailored to grades K-2, 3-5 and 6-12. Cambridge Education was responsible for the distribution of the survey and analysing the results, which are ultimately reported back to schools as actionable statistics.

To get things moving (working with the CE Product team) we sketched out some rough layout options for the key screens and talked through the benefits and challenges of using the different layouts. To get things moving I worked with the Survey services team and sketched out some quick layout options for the key screens and talked through the benefits and challenges of using specific layouts.

The business had long-standing brand identity guidelines that we were adopting for the UI, with some flexibility in how we used the core colour palette and typography. The design of form elements within the UI were required to work within the Qualtrics templating system, which meant discussions with the Qualitrics design team about the scope of customisation of their base themes. We used some custom CSS and Javascript (with appropriate fallbacks) to plug some of the gaps in what was possible.

Over the past seven years, the Cambridge Education Survey Services team has successfully delivered survey programs to more than 5 million students and teachers and they continue to grow every year.
I was asked to work with the team to re-design the existing site, which didn't fit the visual direction or aspirations of the services the business was due to roll out. The site would be aimed largely to attract new business from states around the US, giving key information and selling the value and experience of the services. In collaboration with the in-house development team, I worked on the UI design, Wordpress theming and Front-end build.

The team had developed a broad set of visual themes that were being used across other social and print channels. We worked to re-think these, having been asked to retain some of the visual elements that were "out-there" already. With a view to changing those elements more fully in the future.
Underlying principles
The central purpose of the site re-design outlined in the brief was as follows; 1) Re-work content to reflect new services and products, 2) Fully re-design the visual theme of the site 3) Ensure content is accessible and search engine friendly 4) Encourage potential customers to get in touch.
